A to Z Challenge: A is for Agility

Today we start the Blogging From A to Z April Challenge. Each day (except Sunday) we'll post about something corresponding to the letter of the day. You can find other bloggers taking the challenge here.
Today is the letter A, so we chose Agility! Our agility journey began after Dobby completed basic obedience training. We learned the basics of agility equipment including smaller versions on an A-frame, Teeter, Dog Walk and short jumps.
Yes, he decided to jump over the tunnel instead of going through it. As you can see in the video, we had a lot to learn. With more practice, we competed for the first time when Dobby was two years old(You can read all about that first experience here-Essays, Dog Tails, and Tears).

Last fall we attended our first NADAC trial. We didn't Q that weekend but came really close in two classes-0.9 seconds and 1.3 seconds too slow! Then in January we earned three Qs in one weekend and Dobby received his Novice Agility Certificate for Regulars Agility.

Over the past three years Dobby and I have bonded over our training. While he still likes to take victory laps around the ring, he tries to keep them to a minimum. If I could change anything, I would have waited a little longer to start training in agility because in the beginning he learned a lot of bad habits that I'm still working to get rid of.
When I see pictures like this one I'm glad I made the decision to compete in agility. He truly loves every minute he gets to run in the ring especially when it involves tunnels.

  3. How fantastic! Great video too. I suspect Mort and I will do agility at some point (we've done some work on equipment), but focusing on disc and freestyle disc for this year. But everytime I see great posts like this I'm inspired to start right away :)

  7. Leo went through Agility training last year. He was unable to master the tunnel, so we sort of didn't graduate - HOWEVER - we had a real blasts bonding, so for me it was more than worth it.

  8. Congratulations on your title. That is quite an accomplishment. We love agility too but I can;t commit to the time it takes to prepare for competition. Well, neither can the dogs! :)

  13. I love agility! Years ago I did agility with my beagle (imagine that, a beagle doing agility). Nothing serious for us, just a lot of fun. He is now 14 and we have a new black lab puppy. I can't wait to do agility with her!

    Thanks for writing.
